5 Reasons why do I love Smoothies

Yes, I am among those thousands of people who love having smoothies for breakfast. In fact, I am so addicted to these nutrition-packed drinks that my day does not seem to go right if it starts without a big glass of cold smoothie! My passion for smoothies is by no means restricted to the start of the day. I make them whenever I feel hungry, whether it’s morning, evening or the middle of the night. You can pack so many nutritious elements in one glass that you cannot possibly consume if you were to eat the ingredients raw or in any other form.

If your new year’s resolution was to start eating healthy and restrict yourself to homemade food, smoothies are an excellent way to start. You don’t have to spend hours finding a recipe and then some more hours preparing it in the kitchen. You only have to take out your smoothie blender, throw some fruits, vegetables, milk or yogurt, sugar or any sweetener you like, nuts too if you want and blend them! Ta Da!! All done. Now enjoy your glass with a good movie!

Here are all the reasons why I love smoothies and why you should love them too:

Quick and easy to make:

Probably one of the primary reasons why many people prefer having smoothies for breakfast, especially on weekdays, is that they take very little time to prepare as compared to most other foods. You simply need to cut some fruits coarsely and add them to the smoothie blender along with a couple of more things. Blend for a while and it’s done. If you are keeping count, it will take less than 5 minutes to get the whole thing done.

Taste great:

Convenience and health benefits aside, one could have smoothies only because they taste so great! I have tried so many different combinations of fruits and vegetables to create smoothies that it’s hard to count. No doubt, some experiments didn’t turn out so well and tasted horrible but most of them tasted wonderful. If you’re not so fond of experimenting, you could try out the millions of recipes on the internet and explore new flavors.

Rich in nutrients:

A smoothie gives us our required share of nutrients from the fruits and vegetables that we add to it. It’s really hard to consume the same amount of fruits and vegetables if we were to eat them raw. Let’s be honest, I’m not so fond of fruits and vegetables and neither are most of you. But when you transform these fruits and veggies into a smoothie, we all just love it! What I mean is, smoothie is an easy way to live healthy.

Quick to consume and digest:

While most of the other foods require you to sit down and give it at least a few minutes to eat, smoothie is something you can gulp down your throat in less than a minute if you’re pressed for time. If, however, you have time to spare, I would suggest taking time to enjoy such a delicious drink by drinking it slowly. Not only can you prepare and consume it quickly, but your system will also be able to digest it quickly. Since your best smoothie blender does the hard part for your digestive system by ‘chewing’ the food and the fruits and vegetables you add to the drink are rich in dietary fibers, your digestive system won’t have to work too hard in digesting it.

Weight loss:

Many people also take it up as a diet for weight loss. In a glass of smoothie, you get all the necessary nutrients without adding to your calorie consumption. Most diet plans involve replacing one or two of your meals per day with a healthy glass of smoothie. It’s a wholesome meal to keep your tummy full and satisfied for a long time without the additional calories.

Homemade smoothies are the best. Smoothies from the stores cannot beat the taste and the amount of nutrients that the homemade ones provide.

A complete guide for purchasing the mini food processor

Mini food processors are a favorite kitchen tool of most home cooks and even chefs. They are sometimes even more useful than a regular sized food processor because of their expertise in processing smaller quantities, compact size and convenience of use and cleaning. The simplicity in design and mechanism allows you to take it out even for the simplest of the kitchen tasks without worrying about any complex setup or cleanup. If you have decided to buy a mini food processor for your home, there are some things you need to keep in your mind when you are making your selection:

Although mini food processors are designed for smaller tasks and smaller quantities so they are not going to be as powerful as the regular sized food processors but a minimum of 250 watts is a must if you don’t want it overheating every time you run the machine for chopping some nuts or garlic. The power will mostly depend on the quality of the food processor and the size of the work bowl. If the work bowl is comparatively larger for example 4 to 5 cups, the power should also be greater.

Unlike with larger appliances, size is not much of an issue here since a mini food processor is supposed to be small. Nevertheless, consider the capacity that you will be requiring for the tasks you are meaning to buy the food processor for. You also need to consider the amount of storage space you have in your kitchen. Look for a compact design if you are worried about shortage of your counter space.

One of the most important questions you need to ask is whether the appliance that you are going to buy is easy to clean. The best models are always dishwasher safe and do not have a lot of parts that require cleanup. Most of them will only have lid, blades and bowl that require cleaning. Also check to see that the design of the detachable parts and the base should not have any tiny places where the food might get stuck.

A sturdy base is important to keep the machine stationary while you are processing food inside it. The preferred material for the work bowl is usually transparent plastic which lets you monitor the food being processed inside and does not break too easily. The material should be BPA-free especially if you are planning to use it for making baby food.

Which Type of Juicer You Should Get: Centrifugal or Cold Pressed

If you have been researching about the latest juicers because you are planning to buy one, you must have come across two very prominent names: centrifugal juicers and cold press juicers. Although both type of juicers are a good investment on your health and create delicious, healthy, homemade juices, there is much difference in their mechanism and the quality of the juice that they create. Before deciding which of the two types of juicers to select for yourself, you will need to take a deeper look at their differences. Here are some of the major differences between the two types of juicers:

Centrifugal Juice Extractor:

These are the traditional types of juicers and more affordable than the cold press juicers. The basic mechanism in centrifugal juicers is the same. It involves a metal blade spinning at high speed against a mesh. This mechanism breaks down the fruit separating the juice from the pulp. The pulp and the juice then get collected in separate containers so that the juice may be consumed and the pulp may be discarded. Although these juicers are much cheaper and also faster in extracting juice than the cold press varieties, the problem with them is that the blades that are spinning at high speeds generate heat which oxidizes some of the nutrients in the drink making it less nutritious than the one created by the cold press method. Also, they only work well for a small range of ingredients. Leafy greens do not work so well with these types of juicers.

Cold Press Juicers (or Masticating Juicers):

These are the newer varieties of juicers which have quickly gained popularity which most of the health conscious families are turning to instead of the traditional centrifugal juicers. Instead of using spinning blades as was the case with centrifugal juicers, these varieties first crush the fruits and vegetables and then press them to extract the juice. Juice extracted in this way is better in quality to the one extracted through the centrifugal juicer since the amount of heat produced is much smaller and thus most of the nutrients in the raw ingredients survive and get transferred into the drink. Another advantage these juicers have over the other variety is that they can work with a larger variety of ingredients. For example with a cold press juicer you can also add green vegetables to make your juice even more nutritious. Centrifugal juicers, however, do not process leafy greens so well.  The only problem with these juicers in comparison to the traditional varieties is that they cost much higher and they are also much slower. However, if you put health above everything else, cold press juicers are undoubtedly the winners!

With this information you will easily be able to decide which tool you prefer best to meet your juicing requirements. One thing that is for sure is that both the juicers help you lead a healthier life.
